Seasonal coffees
The seasonal coffee blends allow us to experiment with the newest and most exclusive varieties that stand out at different times of the year. In Colombia only Arabica coffees are cultivated, recognized for their smooth taste, high quality and good price in the market. The varieties of this type of coffee that are cultivated in Colombia such as Tipica, Bourbon, Maragogipe, Tabi, Caturra and Variedad Colombia are the protagonists of these seasonal offers, which are carefully selected according to the harvest season, they are roasted differently and combined with other flavors and spices depending on the season in order to give them a specific flavor profile, for example, to make the coffee sweeter, more acidic, with more or less caffeine, with notes of dried fruits, sweet, chocolatey, etc., which are sold as a blend of specialty coffees at a better price.
What are seasonal specialty coffees?
Specialty coffees are of very good quality from seed to cup, many have a flavor profile created for a season and are graded under the SCA (Specialty Coffee Association) scoring protocol: less than 80 points is not considered specialty, 80-84 is a very good coffee, 85-89 is an excellent specialty coffee and 90-100 is considered exotic specialty coffee. The determination of the score comes from the cupping and production, where the aroma, acidity, sweetness, flavor in general, balance, and various other factors in the body of the coffee are taken into account.
Seasonal coffees in trend
Currently we can find in the market seasonal coffees with natural ingredients that include pumpkin spice, cinnamon and nutmeg made with Arabica coffee balanced to make reference to autumn flavors. There are also coffees within the market designed for winter with notes of traditional flavors such as cinnamon, honey and chocolate, smooth and slightly acidic, as well as other less common flavors that include mint, liqueurs, apple, orange and spices, with a stronger roast.
Some more luxurious seasonal coffees can now have dessert flavors, for example we find Crème Brulée or Cookie flavored coffees, coffees that are given a flavor profile with notes of vanilla, honey, nuts and smoked, such as our proprietary development “Café Matiz Baileys”.
Why offer seasonal coffees?
Offering seasonal coffee blends has multiple advantages for companies, consumers and coffee producers. For companies in the beverage industry, it is an opportunity to stand out for the freshness of the beans and to generate interest with “limited edition” products.
In addition, from a commercial point of view, seasonal blends allow the inclusion of coffees of different scores with high quality profiles, improving the productive yield, creating unique and different flavors. At the production level, making an annual commitment to coffee growers provides economic stability to producers, guaranteeing them long-term income, allowing them to improve their farms and invest in the quality of their crops, which strengthens the industry-producer relationship and creates exceptional products for consumers.
